(BEIJING, September 1) -- The first weekday since the launch of the Paralympic traffic lanes and the first day of the new term for primary and middle schools put added pressure on Beijing's traffic and transportation systems during morning and evening rush hours, the Beijing Daily reported on September 1.
Paralympic-designated traffic lanes were opened on August 30 for the exclusive use of authorized vehicles. Though reduced in total length as compared with the Olympic traffic lanes, the Paralympic lanes cover the east and north Second Ring Road and roads in the Olympic central areas. The Beijing Traffic Management Bureau has warned drivers to avoid these roads during rush hour to help reduce traffic congestion.
Large numbers of participants in the Beijing Paralympic Games will be arriving in the city starting today and are expected to bring addition traffic to the airport expressway and the east Second Ring Road. Tourist sites, museums, restaurants and shopping areas are expected to be busy as Paralympic athletes and officials tour Beijing.
In addition, roads around the Olympic Green and Paralympic Family hotels are under temporary traffic control. Drivers are encouraged to bypass these restricted or busy roads and avoid peak periods of traffic when possible.
On the first day of the new term for primary and middle schools, school buses received special permits from the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, exempting them from the odd-even license plate restriction.
