IPC President Sir Philip Craven to carry Paralympic torch

(BEIJING, September 4) -- The Paralympic torch will be relayed at the China Millennium Monument, the Summer Palace, and Chaoyang Park in Beijing on September 5 and 6. President of the International Paralympic Committee Sir Philip Craven will participate in the torch relay as a torchbearer.

At 8:30 a.m. local time (UTC/GMT +8) on September 5, the Paralympic flame will pass along the "Ancient China" route and the "Modern China" route and eventually meet at the China Millennium Monument. From there it will continue to be relayed in the Beijing region.

The two-day torch relay activity will cover a total of 12 kilometers, and will take about 3 hours and 20 minutes. Each day will have a 15 minute-long starting ceremony, and 43 torchbearers will participate in the relay.

The 38th torchbearer among them is IPC president Sir Philip Craven. Craven also served as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a member of the Executive Board of the British Olympic Association, a board member of the London 2012 Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and member of the IOC 2008 Beijing Coordination Commission.

In addition, Craven is an accomplished wheelchair basketball player. He won a gold medal at the World Championship/Gold Cup in 1973, a bronze medal at the World Championship/Gold Cup in 1975, gold medals at the European Championship in 1971 and 1974, a silver medal at the European Championship in 1993 and a gold medal at the European Champions Cup in 1994. He also served as President of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) from 1998-2002.
