(BEIJING, September 4) -- Athletes from the largest Paralympic delegation in Chinese history will do their best to achieve good results in competitions and promote exchanges with athletes from other nations at the upcoming Paralympic Games, said Chef de Mission of China's Paralympic Delegation Wang Xinxian at a press conference held on the morning of September 4.
The Chinese delegation consists of 547 people, including 332 athletes, and around 30 percent of were in the last session of the Paralympics while 226 competitors are debut participants in the Paralympic Games. The delegation will participate in all 20 sports. As opposed to the Olympics, which had 302 events in 28 sports, the Paralympic Games has 472 events in 20 sports. The 332 Chinese athletes will compete in competitions of 295 events. More events allow for a fair Paralympics that accommodates many different classes of disabilities, said Wang.
The Chinese Paralympic athletes come from all walks of life from all over the country, including students, farmers, workers and self-employed individuals, said Mr Wang. Chinese athletes do well in Swimming, Track and Field, Weightlifting and Table Tennis, and hope for breakthroughs in other events this year.
The Chinese Paralympic athletes are determined to learn from the Chinese Olympic Delegation, who just finished with 100 medals in August. The Chinese athletes will also strive to showcase good sportsmanship and display civility as part of a general effort by the host country to promote acceptance of people with disabilities.
During the Paralympics, Chinese athletes look forward to opportunities for exchange with athletes and officials from 148 countries and regions. These will be informative for all participants, because international athletes bring with them a lot of knowledge and experience regarding their own country's policies regarding issues like employment and infrastructure accessibility for people with disabilities. China will be able to learn more about the gaps that separate China from more developed countries in this respect.
